Latticino Swirls

German Swirl marbles are cane-cut handmades produced primarily from the 1850s through the early 1900s. The design is built into the glass cane before the marble is cut, creating an interior structure that twists from pontil to pontil. Base glass is typically clear, with white and yellow the most common colors, followed by green, blue, red, and orange.

Core types:

  • Latticinio - most common; inner lattice of twisted colored threads
  • Solid Core - dense tubular column of color through the center
  • Divided Core - three to six separate ribbon bands with clear glass between them
  • Ribbon Core - one or two flat bands; rarer than the others
  • Coreless - outer decoration only, no central core

Sizes run from peewee under 1/2" through standard range up to shooters over 1". Examples above 1-1/2" carry a meaningful premium.
